In 1952, Mario, the unemployed son of an Italian fisherman, sees in a newsreel that the exiled Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, is to live on their island. Impressed by the number of women mobbing his train, Mario secures the job of Neruda's personal postman. They eventually become friends. Mario is smitten by Beatrice, the local bar owner's niece, and tries to enlist Neruda as scribe of his love. He refuses but gives him a book which he signs in front of her. Neruda is the witness at their wedding and then returns to Chile. The Christian Democrats win a landslide election and reneg on their promise to supply running water to the island. Mario becomes a Communist. Neruda returns ten years later and learns that Mario died at a Communist demonstration at which he was to read his poetry. Beatrice plays a tape he made of his poem to Neruda.
